Registration for the professional qualification exam
At the end of the apprenticeship period, apprentices must register for the exam to become journeymen.
After accumulating the required hours, apprentices must fill out a request form for a new competency card. Thereafter, CPA Montréal will invite them to take the exam.

A panel consisting of examiners who are active in the automobile services industry oversees and administers the exam.
The supervisor greets candidates, explains the exam procedures, ensures proper conduct of the exam, and assigns a module to each one of the examiners, who become responsible for it.
The examiners are responsible for administering exams in compliance with current administrative directives.
The supervisor and each examiner hold a first-class qualification certificate in the trade of the exam they are supervising.
To be well prepared for your exam, refer to the “Training” section of the Web site after completing your self-evaluation test or reading your preparation kit.
Candidates who pass the exam will receive a qualification certificate identifying them as journeymen.
Journeymen who qualify for first class have attained the highest level, and should keep their knowledge up to date.
Journeymen who qualify for second or third class can retake the exam to obtain higher certification.
In general, third-year apprentices who fail the exam must work for 12 months in the corresponding trade before exercising their right to be re-examined by CPA Montréal.
Note : Candidates who fail the exam do not lose competency cards they already hold.
Prior learning assessment program
Third-year apprentices who do not obtain the required passing grade in their exams in body repair, or painting, but who nevertheless pass in one or more modules, may register for the Prior Learning Assessment Program.
This program is offered by CPA Montréal to encourage apprentices to exercise their right to be re-examined once they are eligible to do so. The apprentices will concentrate exclusively on developing those skills relating to the module or modules they failed during the exam, with a view to obtaining the journeyman third class card. Third-year apprentices wishing to obtain a first- or second-class journeyman card must retake all modules of the exam.
CPA Montréal sends exam results to candidates along with a registration form for the program. The form must be completed and returned. Results of the module(s) that were completed successfully will be recorded for 12 months.
