Mandate and mission

Our mandate

The CPA Montréal's mandate is to ensure compliance with the Decree and professional qualification regulations. It also participates in the continuous professional training of the governed workforce. It has the leeway to determine:

  • the working conditions proposed to the Cabinet to become laws under the Decree;
  • the contents of qualification exams used to evaluate the skills of the workforce;
  • the professional categories established from those exams;
  • the recognition of competency cards issued by other CPAs;
  • the contents of the continuous professional training and the means by which it is dispensed.

Our mission

  • Providing fair working conditions to all employees;
  • Promoting the image of the industry and attracting newcomers;
  • Keeping the skills and competency of qualified workers up to date;
  • Stimulating healthy competition among businesses.

Definition of the automotive services industry

The automotive services industry includes all activities relating to the maintenance, repair, modification, inspection, and preparation of vehicles (in the sense of Article 4 of the Highway Safety Code, R.S.Q. c. C-24-2) and the installation of parts and accessories in vehicles, in order to reestablish or maintain their physical integrity, optimal and safe functioning, and comfort. It also includes the sale, provision, and distribution of products, parts, and accessories necessary to these activities.

Our concerns

The safety of the workforce

Lifting vehicles, using dangerous tools, and working with flammable fluids are serious matters. Unskilled employees are a danger to themselves and their colleagues. Continuous professional training and qualifying requirements both reduce the incidence rate of accidents or dangerous behaviour.

The protection of consumer rights

A vehicle should not be altered in any way other than necessary following a repair. Unskilled employees can sometimes create new problems or even permanently damage a vehicle. Such a mishap can even void a vehicle's warranty.

The environment

Today's cars and trucks are very complex machines. Maintaining their ignition, fuel, and pollution control systems requires highly qualified professionals. Qualification ensures that this important requirement is met. Moreover, the CPAs, with the help of the government, can work together in applying environmental legislation in those concerned sectors of our industry.
